Following these two concerts, many appreciative messages were received, including the following:
"Congratulations on the B minor Mass performance in Lancaster on Saturday! The opening 'Kyrie' engaged the capacity audience immediately with both choir and orchestra sounding magnificent, and the elusive 'tingle factor' was present for me in this and also in the 'Confiteor Unum Baptisma' in the second half. The 'Gloria' and all the other joyful sections blew everybody away with their brilliance, and all my other favourite sections ('Qui Tollis', 'Et Incarnatus Est', Crucifixus', and the unbearably beautiful 'Agnus Dei', as well as the moving 'Dona Nobis' which brings this masterpiece to its close) were beautifully done. Levens choir seems to be going from strength to strength, and the sopranos even managed to make those high Gs and As sound effortless and beautiful."
Several messages were received from members of the orchestra, including these:
"Thank you Ian, it was a great privilege to be able to play that amazing work with your choir, who did such a superb job."
"Always an enjoyable (if exhausting) work to take part in and I'm glad the choir had a good time. We thoroughly enjoyed our two visits to the area, and were billeted with delightful, friendly people on both occasions."
"From my side I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The performances were first class, and both in lovely venues. I also have to say that it was an awesome experience meeting and playing alongside Crispian Steele-Perkins!"
"It was amazing that you had been able to gather together so many Baroque specialists, the horn player in Lancaster was particularly good."
"The atmosphere was lovely and it was a great pleasure to take part in the performance.... And being in what was probably the coolest place in Lancaster was an added bonus!"
It's hard now to recall that these two performances took place during a heatwave!
Finally here is a message from audience member Tim Burnett:
"Just to say that was quite some performance last night, & good to see you watching the conductor so well! Fantastic choral sound & singing, not to mention the horn-player et al. My sister & brother-in-law, who are avid culture buffs, came away saying the Oxford Bach Choir could never have matched it. Yeah!!"
