"Tenebrae": Music for Holy Saturday.  Conducted by Gawain Glenton.

A special short concert of music by Gesualdo, Victoria and Zelenka. Free entry. Refreshments will be served after the concert.

This concert features music written for the services of Tenebrae (or ‘shadows’) which took place on the three days immediately before Easter Day: Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday. The name Tenebrae refers to the fact that the services were lit by eleven candles (representing Jesus’ disciples minus Judas Iscariot). These were gradually extinguished, leaving the church in eventual darkness.  The pieces we have compiled for this event were all written specifically for Holy Saturday.

Retiring collection will be shared between St Johns Church and Levens Choir.
