Dear friends
First, let me introduce myself. Val Walshe, who has held the role of Publicity Officer for Levens Choir for several years, has decided to step down and I am taking her place. I am Alison McLeod, one of the 2nd Altos. I have been with the Choir for about 4 years. Please bear with me as I learn the ropes of the role!
Our summer concert, Americana, will soon be upon us. This will be an exciting and varied programme of music by 20th century US composers (the clue is in the title!), including Aaron Copland and Philip Glass, as well as some who are less well-known, for example Moses Hogan and John Jacob Niles. Together they will showcase the range of styles in American music which have had a world-wide influence over the last century.
We have chosen this theme in recognition of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence of the United States, which falls on July 4th. A particular local resonance for this anniversary is that the ancestors of George Washington, the first president of the USA, came from the village of Warton, between Silverdale and Carnforth. The ‘stars and stripes’ is said to be based on the Washington family coat of arms.
What you need to know is that the venue has had to be changed for the first of these concerts. This was due to an accidental double-booking by the venue. Americana will not now be performed at St Oswald’s Church, Warton as previously advertised.
We will perform the programme twice. The first performance will now be at St John’s Church, Silverdale LA5 0RH on Sunday 5 July, at the later time of 7.30pm. Arrangements for the second concert are unchanged: it will be at St Anne’s Church, Ings, near Kendal LA8 9PY on Tuesday 7 July at 7.30pm.
