History

The Choir started in the 1970s with a few friends meeting weekly in Levens village school in South Cumbria to indulge their passion for choral music. Since then it has gone from strength to strength under the guidance of its founder and Musical Director, Ian Jones.

Levens Choir has performed to great acclaim in such illustrious venues as St Giles Cathedral Edinburgh, York Minster, Pershore and Tewkesbury Abbeys;  and also in Worcester, Ely, Lichfield, Wells and Durham Cathedrals, as well as in Cumbrian venues such as Kendal Parish Church, Cartmel Priory and Lanercost Priory.

Our annual carol singing has become a permanent fixture in the Levens Choir calendar.  We begin in Kendal library around 10am and head to the Westmorland shopping centre on the Saturday before Christmas. Friends, family and passers-by join in to swell our ranks.

Since March 2020, the restrictions imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic have caused us to suspend our weekly in-person rehearsals and cancel all concerts scheduled before Summer 2021.  We have continued to meet on Zoom to prepare fresh repertoire, and have ventured into isolation recording,  We hope to resume live rehearsals in June 2021
