Description: | ![]() At the heart of this concert are pieces by two composers, Johann Sebastian Bach and Arvo Pärt. Although they were born 250 years apart into different traditions, both were driven by their profound faith to change the way in which we understand music - in Bach’s case developing baroque counterpoint within the Lutheran tradition and Pärt’s new form of orthodox music with close, often clashing, harmonies inspired by Gregorian chant, under the title of ‘tintinnabulation’ (the Latin for the sound of small bells). Led by their conductor, Gawain Glenton, and accompanied by Manchester Cathedral’s accomplished organist Christopher Stokes, Levens Choir will perform some classic choral works of these two composers, along with pieces by two members of Bach’s extended musical family and Pärt’s Polish contemporary, Henryk Górecki.
